Ochre is a naturally occurring golden-yellow mineral that turns red when heated. Humans have been collecting ochre for over tens of thousands of years. Preserved artifacts reveal that early humans intentionally ground ochre into paint to make marks that carried meaning. The marks were signals to others about how they saw the world and what was important to them.
